Down the Tubes:

London Underground and the Public-Private Partnership

A look at the Public-Private Partnership working on the London Underground

The London Undergroung, or "Tube", has been the cities mass tranist rail system since 1863. It provides its services to approximatly 3 million Londoners daily. It is currently in the midst of a complete renovation project. Every aspect of the system, from trains to rails to stations, is being fixed or replaced in an effort to keep the valuable transportation resource operational and efficient.

The Tube renovation project has been undertaken by a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). A PPP usually takes the form of a project where the government feels that a partnership between the public and a private company would be better able to meet the needs of the project. In the case of the Tube Project, partial control of the London Underground was given to 2 private firms: Metronet and Tube Lines. Metronet is in charge of renovating and maintaining 9 of the underground lines. Tube lines is responsible for the other 3 underground lines. The renovations include work on the tracks, trains, signals and stations.
