Studying the Needs of the Transportation Disadvantaged: Elderly and Developmentally Disabled

(Hennepin County, Minnesota, $90,000,18 months, PI-David Levinson)

Original Abstract:

This project investigates the travel demands and activities (in terms of both actual behavior and unmet needs) of transportation disadvantaged individuals. Broadly, transportation disadvantaged populations include elderly, poor, children, persons who do not speak English, the physically disabled, and the developmentally disabled. To date there has been no comprehensive study of the transportation demands of these disadvantaged populations, who have been ignored in conventional transportation planning. Each group warrants an independent study of significant depth, which is beyond the scope of this single proposal. This first phase of this project will focus on the needs of the elderly and developmentally disabled.
